Redefining Balance: Let Go of Perfect, Embrace What Matters
January arrives with its usual buzz: resolutions, fresh starts, and a desire to find that elusive balance. But let’s pause for a moment. What does balance truly mean to you? For many, it’s the image of juggling work, relationships, family, and health perfectly, without dropping a ball. Yet, striving for this kind of perfection can leave us feeling drained, overwhelmed, and disconnected from what truly matters.
The good news? Balance doesn’t have to mean perfection—it’s about alignment.
Why the Idea of Balance Feels So Elusive
Neuroscience shows that our brains are not designed to multitask effectively. Constantly switching between roles and responsibilities taxes our mental resources, increasing stress and reducing productivity. This isn’t failure—it’s biology. Balance isn’t about doing everything; it’s about choosing what to focus on and letting the rest take its place.
Your nervous system plays a role here, too. When we’re stuck in a state of constant “doing”—a fight-or-flight response—our body can’t settle into the rest-and-digest mode necessary for true restoration. This is where somatic awareness comes in: listening to the signals your body sends when it’s overworked, overstimulated, or just needs a break.
The Power of Redefining Balance
Balance, instead of being about perfect harmony, can become about alignment. This means making space for what nourishes your mind, body, and spirit. It’s not about fitting everything in but focusing on what fits your values and priorities.
Three Questions to Redefine Your Balance:
What energises me? Think about the activities or relationships that genuinely make you feel alive and whole. Are they getting enough of your attention?
What drains me? Identify the areas of your life that consistently deplete you. Can you delegate, adjust, or even let some of them go?
What feels true to me? This is about authenticity. Are you living in a way that reflects your values and who you want to be, or are you caught in patterns driven by external expectations?
A Somatic Practice for Daily Alignment
One way to bring balance into your day is to connect with your body. Here’s a simple grounding exercise:
Pause and Breathe: Find a quiet moment and take five deep, intentional breaths. As you inhale, feel your chest and belly expand; as you exhale, let go of tension in your shoulders and jaw.
Body Scan: Close your eyes and mentally scan your body from head to toe. Notice areas of tightness or discomfort. What might these sensations be telling you?
Set an Intention: After your scan, ask yourself: What does my body need right now? It might be movement, rest, or even a nourishing meal. Honor that need in the best way you can.
A New Kind of Balance
Redefining balance is about tuning out the noise of “shoulds” and tuning into yourself. This process isn’t static; it evolves as you do. Some weeks, balance might look like prioritising family dinners and early nights. Other times, it might mean saying no to commitments to protect your energy. The key is allowing your definition of balance to reflect your current season of life.
At Her Nurtured Life, I understand that balance is deeply personal. It’s not about fitting into a mould—it’s about reshaping your life to nurture what truly matters.
